A fatal fire was reported early this morning (Friday) near Markesan.

   Around 4 a.m., a house fire was reported at N2828 Highway 44, about a mile northeast of Markesan.

   The home was fully engulfed in flames when Green Lake County Sheriff's Department deputies arrived on scene, according to a press release from the sheriff's department.

   After Grand River Fire District personnel were able to douse the fire, an initial investigation uncovered human remains that have not yet been identified, according to the report.

   The cause and origin of the fire are not yet determined. The continuing investigation will involve the state of Wisconsin Fire Marshal's Office, Markesan fire services, the Green Lake County coroner and the sheriff's department, all of which responded to the scene along with Markesan Emergency Management and Markesan EMS.
