It was an emotional meeting for the Green Lake City Council Monday night.

Not because of clashes in opinions, but because of the recent, tragic loss of Green Lake Sanitary District Administrator Charlie Marks.

Prior to talking about the Big Green Lake watershed plan, Mayor Jon McConnell broke the news to the council members.

“Before I turn this over to Glen [McCarty, Green Lake Public Works director] I just want to let everybody know that on [Friday] we lost a very, very integral part of this whole thing when Charlie Marks passed away,” McConnell said in a choked voice. “I just can’t say enough about what he has done. He was just a key part of the lake management plan and he ran the Green Lake Sanitary District. I know he and Glen worked really close along with Stephanie Prellwitz with the Green Lake Association. It’s a big loss.”

Several members were stunned with the news of Marks’ passing, noting it wasn’t right or fair to have lost such a good man.

Others were solemn with downcast eyes.
