A fiber-line break in Oshkosh led to an area-wide outage for 911 and other emergency phone lines last week Thursday.

Though communications were restored the next day shortly before 8 a.m., the incident impacted area residents from being able to reach emergency services directly or easily.

911 was down in Ripon, with such calls redirected to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department.

In Green Lake County, no such recourse was available.

“When the phones went down, we were able to switch our 911 calls to Fond du Lac County Sheriff,” Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner said. “We have that as an established protocol when we have situations. Every agency with a dispatch center needs to have the ability to reroute phone 911 calls in just such cases of equipment malfunction or other events that lead to those types of issues.

“What made this event so unusual was the fact that, in addition to us, Green Lake County, Waushara County and parts of Winnebago County were down as well.”
