For nearly two decades, Ripon has hosted one of the American Cancer Society’s signature fund-raising events: the Relay for Life.

And the community has done so quite successfully.

“In the almost 20 years of relaying, Ripon Relay For Life and its sponsors have contributed approximately $800,000 to the American Cancer Society’s patient programs, services and research,” said Katie McCormick, community development manager for the American Cancer Society.

Those generous individuals, though, will have to look elsewhere beginning this year if they wish to continue supporting the society.

A dearth of people willing to lead the event led to the event being discontinued in Ripon for 2018 and beyond.

Support for the society, though, isn’t over, nor are Riponites now without a Relay.

“Ripon and Campbellsport are merging with Fond du Lac to become the Fond du Lac County Relay for Life,” McCormick said, noting that organizers hope there will be “power in numbers. We are able to be a bigger event: more teams, more survivors, more participants. We will be able to raise more funds toward our mission ... [and] do it all on a bigger platform.”
