It was the highest number of fatal car accidents in one day in Fond du Lac County in at least 40 years.

And each deadly crash occurred not far from Ripon’s borders.

Three separate collisions last week Saturday claimed the lives of four people, including three from the area.

Patsy Knight, 77, of Markesan, Daniel D. Emmer, 56, of Brandon, Brian C. Emmer Jr., 27, of Brandon, and Rickey L. Allen, 34, of Lyndon Station, Wis., all were killed in accidents that occurred within about 5, 10 and 15 miles of Ripon on snow-covered county roads.

The sheer number of fatal crashes to occur in one day was staggering.

“I went back and looked through the records, back 40 years, back to 1978. And we have never — in those 40 years in Fond du Lac County — we never had a day where we had three separate motor vehicle fatalities in the county,” Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Ryan Waldschmidt said. “We’ve had a few over the years where up to four people were killed in one crash, but it was always just in one crash. We never had three separate fatal crashes in a single day.”

In all three collisions, a driver lost control, crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming vehicle, law enforcement said.
