Lack of mental toughness.

That is what Ripon High School head wrestling coach Lee Cotton chalked his team’s 45-27 loss to Tuesday against Lakeland Union.

The dual was part of the Freedom Division 2 Team Sectional.

Lakeland Union, which is located in Minocqua, Wis, lost its next dual 63-8 to Luxemburg-Casco for the right to advance to state.

“We just weren’t mentally prepared for these matches,” Ripon head coach Lee Cotton said. “I don’t think Lakeland was better than us, especially not 45-27 better than us. I just think maybe the pressure the kids put on themselves maybe got to them today or the atmosphere or maybe they were looking forward to the Luxemburg-Casco match after that.”

The Tigers fell behind 39-6 to start the dual, before winning four of the final five weight classes.
