Alyassa Burgess shoots the ball in Ripon’s win over Grinnell.

The Ripon College women’s basketball team has made a habit of dominating teams in the paint and playing suffocating defense.

That was the case again last week Saturday, when it won its seventh-straight conference game with a 63-47 win over the Grinnell Pioneers at the Willmore Center.

The Red Hawks out-scored Grinnell 40-16 in the paint and held the Pioneers to just 33-percent shooting (14 of 43) from the field.

“The team did a pretty good job on the defensive end, putting multiple stops in a row together which creates a lot of momentum for us on the offensive end,” Ripon head coach Lauren Johnson said of went right. “We really feed off of three stops in a row as a team.”

Ripon (8-1 conference, 11-5 overall) was at its best in that department from the midway point in the second quarter to early in the fourth, when it out-scored Grinnell (4-5 conference, 7-7 overall) 37-15 to take a 57-33 advantage.

That included a 13-2 run to end the second quarter that broke open what was a close game at 22-20.

Seven players scored five or more points for the Red Hawks in what was really a team effort.
