The Ripon College women’s basketball team had its hands full against Knox last week Saturday.

It was tied at 11 after one quarter and was up 21-17 at halftime, before pulling away a bit in the third and holding on for a 72-62 victory.

With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 3-1 in the Midwest Conference and 5-3 overall. The Prairie Fire, meanwhile, fall to 2-1 in the conference and 5-2 overall.

“Knox is a tough place to play every year and it was a great win on the road the weekend before finals,” Ripon head coach Lauren Johnson said. “This time of year is tough for everyone because of finals and getting sick. We were proud that our team battled through missed shots and turnovers early on to find a rhythm.”

The game got off to a rough start as Ripon trailed for the majority of the first quarter by as many as three points.

But the Red Hawks tied it with a bucket at the buzzer by Molly Cullinane and took a lead they never relinquished a minute into the second on an Eleanore Mueller basket.

Even so, they were unable to take complete control of the game.

The Prairie Fire cut the deficit to a single-possession contest several times in the second and third quarters before Ripon closed the third on a 14-6 run to take a 58-47 lead.

The margin was double-digits for much of the rest of the way.
