Before last week Saturday’s game against Macalester, Ripon College head football coach Ron Ernst noted his team could not hurt itself if it wanted to be victorious.

“We can’t make a mistake,” he said of the contest. “We make one mistake and they are going to score. They are that kind of team.”

Unfortunately for the Red Hawks, they weren’t able to avoid the miscues. They turned the ball over four times, had a punt blocked for a touchdown and gave up a safety en route to a 47-31 road loss.

With the defeat, they fall to 1-2 in conference and 2-5 overall. The Scots, meanwhile, improve to 3-0 in conference and 5-2 overall.

“We gave up 30 points off of mistakes and we just can’t do that,” Ernst said. “... We probably played as poor of a game in all three areas as we’ve played all year. There were times [this year] where maybe if the defense didn’t play well [but] the offense did. Or if the offense did not play well, the defense did. This was a game where basically all three areas of our game did not play well.”

The game got off to a bad start for Ripon as Macalester drove 86 yards on 10 plays for a touchdown on the first possession.
