2017 was kind to area sports with records smashed, tourneys won and one local high school team going to the Big Dance in Madison.

Here are the top 12 moments from the past year:

Jan. 18 — Hawks snap record streak

The Ripon Red Hawks snap St. Norbert’s Division III record 72-game conference winning streak with an emphatic 81-55 victory. Right, Elliot Hoerdemann,left, and Isaac Masters celebrate as the Knights watch in disbelief.

Feb. 18 — Grapplers send record five to state

The Ripon High School wrestling qualifies a record five wrestlers for the state tournament at the Milwaukee Lutheran Sectional. Qualifying were, from left, Bradley Gabrielski, Zach Beck, Ryan Cody, Tucker Bender and Cody Jacobson. Jacobson finished second at state, while Beck placed fourth. The other wrestlers lost their first matches.

Feb. 25 — RC men win tourney title

The Red Hawks celebrate after winning their first conference tournament title since 2001-02. They defeated Lake Forest 81-72 to win the championship and punch an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost in the first round 87-72.

March 11 — Tigers punch ticket to state

Head coach Dean Vander Plas is mobbed by players and fans as he hoists the sectional plaque following Ripon’s 78-63 win over Martin Luther. The win gave Ripon its first state berth since 2003 and improved its record to 26-0. It then lost 81-74 in the state semifinals to eventual champion Xavier (28-0 overall).
