WISCONSIN MAY BE Packer country, but for one night next week, Ripon’s finest hope that those cheeseheads stink.

“Their bus does have to get into the gym and leave the gym, so ...,” Ripon Police Capt. Bill Wallner said, his voice trailing off as the threat left unsaid.

“I mean, I’ve already predicted we’re going to win,” Officer Tim Grenier added.

What could drive the men and women in blue to stop backing the Pack, even for one night?

A “friendly” fund-raising event to kick off the opening of Ripon College’s Willmore Center — that’s what.

Green Bay Packers alumni featuring Bill Schroeder of the 1997 Super Bowl team  and others will step onto the hardwood at the revamped gym Thursday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. to face off against members of the Ripon Police Department.

Going nose-to-nose tackle against them? School Resource Officer Lindsey Michels, Officer Jesse Tipton, Officer Brett Henning, Officer Paul Mittelstaedt, Investigator Travis Borkenhagen, Off. Tim Grenier and Community Service Officer Kaylee Haring.

It’s not quite a clash of the titans. More like, a rumble of the rolls, considering the Ripon PD’s training regimen.

“They are on a very strict diet for training,” Wallner said. “Monday is plain donuts, Tuesday is powdered donuts, Wednesday are long johns, Thursday is jelly donuts and Friday is salads.” ...

“The department is really excited about being one of the first events in the facility,” Wallner said. “... It’s really special. We feel really privileged to do this.”
