TO THE EDITOR:

An Open Letter to our Elected Officials:

You hold in your hands the future lives of our children. Your responsibility is to them and their families not your donors or your political ambitions.

After every school shooting we feel the pain of the families, offer prayers and sympathy, but what do we do about it?

Based on my 30 years of experience as an administrator in public schools, I have some recommendations. ...

I am suggesting a model that helped the Green Lake School District. It worked because the School Board committed local funds for upgrades with NO state or federal funds provided.

It worked because the County Sheriff supplied an expert to assess the building, provide training, and examine emergency planning.

Due to their recommendations, plate glass windows and entry glass were replaced with laminated safety glass, security cameras were installed, remote door locks were put into the entryway, and serious training took place.

There is still more to be done, but no funds to finish them. These measures are not perfect, but they are an improvement. ...
