Thank you for your beautiful tribute to Jim Prellwitz (“Prellwitz honored for serving as Ripon EMT, firefighter: ‘Your last call for service will be to watch over us,’” Jan. 4, 2018).

... I first started on as an intern for Ripon Guardian Ambulance in 2007 and was working as a full-fledged member of the crew by 2009.

Jim Prellwitz and Jamie Krueger trained me. Jim’s guidance both personally and professionally I will never forget.

He was an incredible teacher as I learned how to back the ambulance in and out of the garage (harder than one may think!) and patiently taught me how to drive that lifesaving vehicle around Ripon.

It was after a hot summer afternoon in July 2009 that I encountered my first significant trauma situation in which my dear friend Kay (Morgan) Zahn was badly burned in a farm accident that Jim took me aside to make sure I was OK.

... This job, while rewarding, is not easy, and there are many times you are left with only the crew around you to process your tears before your pager goes off again.

As I move on in my professional life I’ll be forever grateful for those experiences. They made me who I am. ...
