Children's fair returns to Ripon

Riponite Jenny Schram paints Emma Draeger of Ripon during last year’s Children’s Fair in Ripon.

A program designed to teach children how to take action in an emergency and a bike-safety event will be the new additions to the 2011 Ripon Noon Kiwanis Children’s Fair.

The free, annual event returns Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at Barlow Park Elementary School in the gymnasium and cafetorium.

Among the new events this spring is Yell & Tell, a program designed by Harley Davidson heir Jean Davidson.

Yell & Tell is aimed at a child who sees something dangerous, feels afraid and doesn’t know what to do. Many times this child will run away or be quiet because he/she doesn’t want to get into trouble or be called a tattletale. The Yell & Tell program teaches children how to take action and be a hero.

Ripon Medical Center also is running a bike-safety program in which children can learn the basics of bike safety and even ride through an obstacle course.

Many Children’s Fair favorites also will return for 2011, including the clothing swap, games, bouncy castle, informational booths featuring local organizations, a visit from Ripon Police K-9 officer Dani and a visit from local emergency vehicles.

The fifth-annual Children’s Fair is organized by Ripon Noon Kiwanis as an outreach to the community. The free event is aimed at children up to age 8.
