A decision on whether to accept an early-retirement agreement is being delayed for Green Lake’s longtime police chief.

Monday, the Common Council voted 5-0 to extend Steve Huber’s deadline to April 2. This means he has until then to decide whether to accept an agreement narrowly offered last month.

The council voted 3-2 in January to approve the proposal, thereby agreeing to pay a significant amount toward Huber’s health insurance as part of an early-retirement agreement. In opposition were Alds. Joe Parise and Don Carpenter.

Huber now has until April 2 to decide to move forward with it. The city’s cost has not been made public.

City leaders have emphasized the proposed agreement was crafted with possible long-term cost-savings in mind, not because of Huber’s performance as chief.
