Column: Up? Yup! Only a fool would look down on ‘Carl’ Berndt’s health

RURAL RIPON RESIDENT Dave Berndt stood at Minocqua High School, all dressed up with somewhere to go.

The 67-year-old sported a walker, brown suit with bowtie and an assortment of balloons.

The snow was up to here, it was a bit foggy — and dark. Very dark.

So what else could a 67-year-old man from rural Ripon do but go run outdoors? (Or, as he puts it, “fast walk.”)

Some might call it odd. Dave calls it a healthy choice.

The race organizers call it, “Only Fools Run at Midnight.” And, until a few months earlier, Dave had no idea he’d be one of those fools.

But he can’t stop grinning about what he’s accomplished in a relatively short time. ...
