To the editor:

Hearts to the family of former Riponite Jerry Buhrow, 81, who passed away this month.

Local residents may remember an old-fashioned hobby shop in downtown Ripon that he operated — “Jerry’s Hobbies,” I believe. When I was growing up in the early 1990s, Jerry always had a welcoming gleam when I’d visit his store and marvel at the HO-scale model trains.

Some of them turned into Christmas gifts, which I still have today.

Years later, Jerry and I coincidentally became next-door neighbors on Tabbert Avenue. We reminisced about the old hobby shop, and the memory turned even fonder when Jerry mentioned he ran the place just for fun. We couldn’t ask for a better neighbor.

When I received word of Jerry’s passing, I remembered a sign from his bygone Watson Street store. The sign rested on the glass counter he sat behind: “He Who Dies With The Most Toys Wins.”

I guess he wins. Enjoy, Jerry!
