To the Editor:

(Re.“State Sen. Ballweg, please rescue appointees from positional purgatory,” Jan. 19, 2023) I wanted to make clear that the process in which my legislative aide laid out was correct.

Last session, I chaired the Senate Committee on Agriculture and tourism which held true to this process and voted out all appointments referred to it. My committee members met and spoke with those who were appointed, I held a public hearing and an executive session on each one, and I advocated to my Senate colleagues to approve them on the floor once they were out of my committee.

With the new session starting and me once again chairing the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Tourism, I plan to treat appointees the same and hold true to the process I had last session.

The approval process should have deadlines. Approve someone in 30 days or they automatically get approved. The Republican senate is playing games, and they know it. Regardless who is governor, let the governor govern and show some respect to that office.

We need term limits for all our reps and senators. Ballweg has been in the statehouse for too long. Let's get some fresh thinking how Wisconsin should be governed.

We need a nonpartisan redistricting board first off. Look what happened in Michigan where THE PEOPLE instituted a nonpartisan board and it reshaped the entire state, of course here in Wisconsin the politicians don't trust their constituents with the power to effect change, You know not enough money to be made by doing that.

Arthur,

You need to read the Wisconsin State Constitution.

Johnson v. Wisconsin Elections Commission

"Justice Grassl Bradley wrote for a majority — since politically fair districts are not a cognizable right, the court would not consider maps’ partisan effects.

23. Id. at 482.

Justice Grassl Bradley argued that the text of the Wisconsin Constitution does not support a right to partisan fairness.

24. Id. at 485–88.

Instead, she held that partisan gerrymanders are political questions under the state constitution, as they are under its federal counterpart.

25. Id. at 482.

She reached this conclusion because “the Wisconsin Constitution . . . assigns . . . redistricting to the legislature — a political body”

26. Id.

— and because there are no judicially manageable standards to measure partisan fairness."

Sallie, how does all that vast knowledge fit in such a small place.

Sallie Helmer

State Senator Ballweg is in her first term as Wisconsin State Senator.

"Joan Ballweg (Republican Party) is a member of the Wisconsin State Senate, representing District 14. She assumed office on January 4, 2021. Her current term ends on January 6, 2025."

Al Fresco

So what? She's still a politician and will always be covering her butt while passing responsibilities an blame onto others.

Surely, the district can do much better than her no matter which elected post.

Where are all the good citizens who can step forward to lead us into the future?

Yet you accept Joe Biden as a being a good president.

Under Joe Biden, inflation is at historic levels, violent crime is on the rise, and illegal immigration is out of control. His time in the White House has been a complete disaster.

Biden has been “a politician’ for 50 years—

A recap of Biden’s destruction :

- Record-High Inflation
-

Historic Border Crisis
-

Deadly Afghanistan Withdrawal (worst national security crisis in a generation)
-

Russian invasions of Ukraine

Deadly Crime Crisis

Al Fresco

Sallie, leave it to you to somehow interject your disdain for anything Democrat. What does Biden have to do with Ballweg's incompetence?

As long as you are blaming Biden, I think you need to blame him for the crucifixion and even original sin.

Michael Shohoney

Sallie,

Let's look at your points....

A recap of Biden’s destruction :

- Record-High Inflation
---Inflation has been caused by a two year pandemic (which Trump failed to properly address), supply chain issues, failure of corporations to ramp up production combined with our insatiable want for goods. The president, any president, is not singularly responsible for inflation. I realize that this concept is way above your head.

Historic Border Crisis
---Thought Trump's wall was going to solve this. The courts were going to let Title 42 expire. That fact spread itself throughout Latin America and sent people here in droves. The Biden Administration attempted to have Title 42 extended, it finally was. So, again, not Biden's fault.

Deadly Afghanistan Withdrawal (worst national security crisis in a generation)
---Biden was handcuffed by Trump's withdrawal plan. He had to do it. It was an existing arrangement. Any withdrawal is chaotic.

Russian invasions of Ukraine
---Trump called Putin a genius for this. Whose side is Cheetohead on? And, how in the holy h-e-double hockey sticks is Putin's invasion Biden's fault? It is Trump that empowered Putin in the first place. Get your facts straight.

Deadly Crime Crisis--Sure. Okay. This is on Biden!? Give me a break! Who won't deal with the gun crisis? What party?

First term senator but was in the Assembly for the previous 10 years. She's been around the block a few times. Besides, why is that an excuse for not doing her job?

Sallie Helmer

Michael,

You prove just how easy it is to get Liberals to believe lies. Truth always puts Liberal logic into meltdown mode!

Michael Shohoney

Sallie, step out of your wingnut echo chamber. READ!

So, Senator Ballweg, your response is "I did my job" in response to the editorial that asked you to urge your colleagues to do theirs? We're asking you to do more than the bare minimum. We're asking you to lead. To take up the issue with your colleagues and, yes, apply some pressure on them to do their jobs. If you're not up to that task, then maybe you should seek a different vocation.

Carol Cate

YES! Ms. Ballweg does not know how to lead! She has little influence on her fellow Republicans in the senate but knows how to work to get photo ops.
