Poppy Princess 2021 Lily Soda

2021 Poppy Princess Lily Soda presents Ripon Mayor Ted Grant with the first Ripon Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) poppy of the year.

To the editor:

On Friday, Aug. 6 VFW members and ladies will be standing at the door of many of our local businesses distributing poppies for our annual Buddy Poppy Drive.

Among all the flowers that evoke the memories and emotions of war is the red poppy, which became associated with war after a poem written by Col. John McCrae.

The poem “In Flanders Field” describes blowing red fields among the battleground of the fallen.

It has now become a symbol of war- and war-torn minds and bodies. It is a symbol of sorrow, loss and remembrance. But it is also a sign of hope and help for survivors.

Money donated by the public to the poppy drive is used for veterans’ welfare or aiding their needy dependents.

A portion also goes to the Veterans Hospitals in Tomah and King, as well as the national home in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, where the care is given to widows and orphaned children of veterans. The remaining money stays within our community.

Please take this opportunity Friday, Aug. 6 to personally show your gratitude for the sacrifices made by our veterans by generously giving from the heart and by proudly wearing your poppy.
