To the editor:
As concerned high school students, we wanted to share our thoughts on the importance of getting a COVID-19 vaccine.
In order to be better informed, we have spent time researching and thinking about why the vaccine is necessary for Riponites and people around the country and the world. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are mRNA vaccines, which contain the building instructions for the proteins of a virus, but are not live viruses. These instructions are for building the COVID-19 spike protein, the infection marker of the virus.
These vaccines are not 100% effective against viruses, but they are very effective, allowing our cells to recognize the COVID virus and use the correct methods to eliminate it when it enters the body.
While we have some general skepticism about the motives of large pharmaceutical companies, these companies have had to follow a rigorous testing process and must follow standards and regulations. Pfizer and Moderna have a track record of making important household pharmaceuticals like Advil, Neosporin, Epipen, as well as other vaccines.
Getting a safe vaccine not only protects you, but it protects those around you in your household and in the community.
The best way to get back to normal is to wear our masks, social distance, and get vaccinated. Herd immunity can only be achieved by following expert guidance and group participation.
