To the Editor:

Last week I went to a Ripon store to send a package by UPS. As I walked in, I noticed several of the employees in the store at the time were not wearing masks.

When I asked the individual who scanned my package why she and other employees were not wearing masks, I was cheerfully told that wearing a mask was a mandate, not a law. Foolish me, I thought that the mask mandate was to be followed by all citizens of Wisconsin unless they had a health issue.

Just this past Friday, Jan 8, 2021, Wisconsin announced that in our state, there were more than 500,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 5,000 people have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Something so simple as wearing a mask when in public places has been proven to help prevent the spread of this virus to say nothing of the new variant COVID virus that is being found throughout our country.

But Trump and his cohorts have constantly lied to his supporters about the effectiveness of mask wearing and it appears those who say or believe we don’t have to obey a mandate have completely swallowed those lies. Even with a vaccine on the way, this virus is still deadly and can still harm individuals. We still do not know all the possible lingering effects of this virus on individuals who have survived COVID.

I guess that will be the last time I shop or visit this Ripon store even if it means I have to drive to Fond du Lac or Oshkosh for things that could be found in this local store. Contrast the attitude of this store to the attitude found in Webster’s Marketplace.

The owner of Webster’s Marketplace started requiring masks be worn in the store not just necessarily to protect their shoppers, but to protect their workers. Thank you, Webster’s for your diligence to protect your employees as well as your shoppers.

Folks will remember those businesses who took the time and consideration to care for ALL of their customers. Everything these businesses offer can be purchased with the simple click of a mouse and when these same companies complain down the road that business has gotten so bad that they will have to close their doors, they just might think back to “Gee, maybe I should have been more considerate to my customers and maybe we should have taken that easy step and should have worn those masks”

I know what store you are speaking of and their lack of respect for the health of their customers is appalling.

Carol you must be talking about Ace Hardware. I went in there last weekend and the same thing, customers were wearing a mask but not the employees. I stopped going there over a year ago for that reason and now a year has gone by and Ace hasn't changed a bit. Mailing a package can be done at Grant's in town and we have had good luck there. Ace will never see my wife or I again.
