After delay, hockey rink opens soon

Howard Hansen, left, and son Casey set up the boards for the hockey rink Tuesday morning. The rink could open as soon as next week.

After more than a month of sitting in a pile next to the Village Green, the boards for the hockey rink have gone up in downtown Ripon.

And if all goes well — particularly the weather — the rink should open for use by the end of next week.

“We’ve got to make sure the bases [of the boards] are packed with snow, then we can start putting water down,” rink organizer Howard Hansen said. “... The weather looks good for the next 10 days or so. We’re going to make ice at night ...”

The construction of the hockey rink and the making of the ice was delayed because Hansen needed to sign a usage agreement with Ripon College, which owns the piece of land on which the rink is built.

The contract was scheduled to be signed in December, but was postponed due to the winter storm. With the holidays, they weren’t able to reschedule the meeting until last week Wednesday.

The agreement is for one year only and will have to be renewed.

Once the hockey rink opens, hours will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily — unless otherwise noted.

Skates can be rented at no charge from Imagineers in downtown Ripon.
