One of Green Lake’s newest city aldermen has passed away at age 70.
District 2 Ald. Thomas Jones died last week Thursday.
Jones was one of the newer members on the Green Lake Common Council, being elected less than one year ago to replace LuAnn Mirr-Frank.
He becomes the second Green Lake alderman to die in office in the past four years, after Elmer Ruffner Jr. died in 2006.
Jones, a U.S. Army veteran, served on both the Green Lake Common Council and the Plan Commission.
Fellow Ald. Donna Moore remembers Jones for being “a nice man to be around.”
“Tom was very knowledgeable in his field of construction and engineering,” Moore said. “That knowledge was very helpful for the City Council and Planning Commission. Even though we only worked together for a short time on the City Council, Tom displayed professionalism and had a desire to help our city.”
Ald. Joe Parise was Jones’ friend and colleague. Parise especially remembers Jones’ intelligence.
“I really loved the guy,” Parise said. “He basically stood up for what was right for the city of Green Lake.”
“It’s a shame the man died,” Parise added. “All I know is, he was a wonderful guy.”
The council is expected to appoint a new member to fill the remainder of Jones’ term, which expires in spring 2011.
