Without agreeing to a particular route or to funding the project, the Ripon Common Council gave its consent to a group hoping to secure funds toward building a bike path between Ripon and Green Lake.

If it goes forward, the path would be created at the same time as reconstruction is slated to occur on Highway 23 between the two communities around 2013. It would be built off the highway but within the right-of-way for the road.

At Monday’s meeting, the council agreed to allow Lauree Renaud, Green Lake, to seek alternate funding sources for construction of the bike route, since the DOT will not fund the entire project.

This does not lock the city of Ripon into paying for a project, however. Also still in question is the final route of the path once it reaches Ripon. Organizers wish it to come into Ripon along West Fond du Lac Street, but Ripon’s Park and Recreation Committee would prefer it to head off that path at Koro Road and meet with the Northwestern Trail.

These issues will return at a later date.
