Clark, Olsen square off for first time

State Sen. Luther Olsen, left, R-Ripon, and state Rep. Fred Clark, D-Baraboo.

Recall elections, balancing the state budget and vouchers for private schools.

On those three topics the two candidates for the 14th State Senate district showed Tuesday night they have starkly different opinions.

Sen. Luther Olsen, R-Ripon, and Rep. Fred Clark, D-Baraboo, fielded questions concerning those topics and others during a 60-minute candidate forum at a Best Western hotel in Portage.

About 175 attended the event, which was sponsored by the Adams-Columbia Electric Cooperative.

The two will face off in a recall election Tuesday, Aug. 9 after a sufficient number of voters in spring signed petitions to put into play the state Senate seat Olsen has occupied since 2004.

Although the candidates were civil if not friendly, smiling at each other and shaking hands before and after the forum, they quickly expressed sharp differences about the need for a recall election.
