The Ripon Common Council agreed Tuesday night that it must appoint an interim city administrator to take over some of the duties of outgoing City Administrator Steve Barg until a replacement can be hired.

But it didn’t reach this decision easily.

Consternation about what may be discussed in open session led to long, awkward pauses and concern about how to proceed.

This came to a head Tuesday night because Barg is only a month away from leaving his post to take the same on for the city of Marshfield.

But after he leaves Jan. 17, 2011, it likely will be at least three months before a replacement is hired.

“I think the basic feeling and undertanding is that we really would benefit from having an interim city administrator,” Barg said. “... There is someone on staff I would like to talk about for that position.”
