Demolition downtown ready to go

These braces, holding up the facades of 310-312 Watson St., shouldn’t be necessary after this week.

It appears two fire-damaged buildings in downtown Ripon will be torn down any hour now.

In fact, demolition already may be underway.

Kinas Excavating of Green Lake is expected to begin tearing into 310 and 312 Watson St. as soon as noon today (Wednesday) — just after press time.

UPDATE, 1 pm:

Kinas has arrived, but equipment isn't there yet. Work is expected to begin this afternoon, and could move slowly.

UPDATE, 3 pm:

Work now is underway on the back side of the site.

Alisa Zabel of Boca Grande Capital LLC, the property owner, acknowledged work was expected to begin today. “As far as I know ... unless the schedule changes,” she said as she was awaiting a final call from Kinas about the final schedule.

Lori Kinas, vice president of Kinas Excavating, later confirmed with the Commonwealth work was expected to begin today “after lunch.”

The historic buildings, whose facades have been braced lest they fall on passers-by, have been waiting since Dec. 11, 2013, when a fire broke out on the second floor of the site.
