Fire damages warehouse, trailer near Green Lake

Green Lake-Brooklyn firemen work to cool the smoldering building and trailer.

Green Lake-Brooklyn firemen raced to extinguish a fire May 23 at Badgerland Express LLC, located east of Green Lake on Highway 23.

A semi trailer caught fire in the warehouse, damaging both, Fire Chief Bill Wager said. He believes it may have started accidentally by sparks from equipment.

“An employee was grinding — doing some work on the trailer,” Wager said.

The trailer’s contents (refuse including mattresses, box springs and carpeting) caught fire. The blaze went straight up, Wagner said.

Firemen performed a knock-down of the flames, then jump-started the semi and backed it out of the warehouse.

“An employee wanted to do it, but I wouldn’t let them, seeing how much fire was still in the building,” Wagner said. “So I just had one of my guys do it.”

The fire melted parts of the trailer, the overhead garage doors and ceiling, although Wagner said the building may not be a total loss.

No injuries were reported. Also responding to the fire were fire crews from Berlin and Ripon.
