Late applicant leads to race for District 1

A last-minute addition means the Ripon Common Council will have a decision to make.

Mandy Hughes, 607 W. Thorne St., submitted a letter of interest to be considered for the vacant District 1 aldermanic seat vacated by former Ald. Todd Elliott when he moved across town.

Her resume and letter arrived at City Hall literally in the closing minutes before last week Friday’s 4 p.m. deadline.

“I was leaving at 4 and saw something in my basket,” City Administrator Lori Rich said, noting the letter arrived minutes before.

As such, now the council has two individuals seeking the District 1 seat: Hughes and John Splitt.

The two will be considered Tuesday, Sept. 12 by the Common Council, which will interview each and select one for the position.

Whoever is chosen will serve the next six months of Elliott’s term, until April’s spring general election.
