Lee H. Stellmacher may have set a local record — or at least come darn close.
The Green Lake County man charged with attempted murder posted a $1 million cash bond in Fond du Lac County Court last week Wednesday.
Now, for the first time in more than nine months, Stellmacher is free, at least for now.
His jury trial is scheduled to begin in September.
District Attorney Dan Kaminsky reacted to the million-dollar posting with surprise.
“I think it’s pretty unique,” Kaminsky told the Commonwealth. “I’ve talked to people around the office, and nobody’s ever heard of anyone posting a bond anywhere near that amount. I don’t think it’s ever happened in Fond du Lac County.”
Stellmacher, 61, N6860 Forest Ridge Road in the town of Brooklyn, was charged Sept. 1, 2011, with conspiracy to commit first-degree intentional homicide and conspiracy to commit battery or threat to a witness.
He’s accused of trying to pay money in an alleged attempt to have a local man beaten and an Indiana man killed.
