Pastimes honored for steps taken to prevent underage drinking

A certificate of appreciation was presented to Pastimes owners, Bob and Caryl Hilke, by the Ripon Underage Drinking Initiave (RUDI) for their action that prevents underage drinking.

A recently passed city ordinance requires at least a 4-foot barrier to be placed around outdoor dining areas. The ordinance does not specify what type of material is required to build the barrier.

Bob and Caryl Hilke chose to build their barrier with a 6-foot wrought-iron fence for security and aesthetic purposes.

By choosing a taller fence than was required, and by installing two surveillance cameras, they have reduced alcohol access to minors.

“I wanted to keep an eye on things (by installing the cameras), but also wanted to make it difficult for those underage to jump over the fence,” Bob Hilke said. “We want our place to be both beautiful and protected.”

Mayor Gary Will, a RUDI member, said, “More community members need to stand up and show underage drinking is a problem and being overlooked, but also be willing to do something about it.”
