Skating rink may open by Saturday

Casey and Howard Hansen stand on the ice rink they helped build.

It’s nearly time for Ripon to don those wool caps and lace up the ice skates.

In downtown Ripon, the opportunity for frozen fun is bigger and better. The 2010 skating rink on the Village Green is twice the size as last year’s rink — at more than 6,700 square feet. It may be ready by Saturday.

But this year will see the addition of a separate hockey rink as well.

It will be located on a vacant lot next to the staking rink, and should be ready within a few weeks. Volunteers are hoping to organize three-on-three play, if there’s enough interest.

Finally this year, rink organizers plan to smooth the surfaces of both rinks with a makeshift Zamboni created from — of all things — a lawn mower.

These are big changes that were brought on by a number of volunteers and donors, coupled with the interest that came from last year’s inaugural rink on the Village Green.
