UPDATE ... Man killed in Highway 44 crash near Ripon -- name released
A fatal, two-vehicle crash shut down Highway 44 northeast of Ripon Tuesday around 1:20 p.m. It involved a semi and a sedan.

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department has confirmed 29-year-old Nicholas Lee Ryan of Fond du Lac was killed on scene. Authorities believe he lost control on the snow-covered road, crossed the centerline and struck a semi heading in the opposite direction.

Authorities said Ryan was wearing a seatbelt, but believe he was driving too fast for conditions, according to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department.

Ryan's wrecked sedan came to rest in a residential front yard off one side of the highway. The semi went off the road to the other side, with its front end and axel badly damaged. The semi driver, age 49, was not injured.

The accident occurred near the intersection of Fletcher Road, northeast of Ripon city limits. Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash shut down a stretch of Highway 44 for an extended time Tuesday afternoon.

As emergency crews arrived, snow was falling heavily on the scene, though it later abated. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department stated the officer of record for this crash was still on scene as of 4 p.m.
