Used cars will be sold, subtly, at Welcome Inn

In a sense, Ripon’s Welcome Inn is going to become even more welcoming.

Limited car sales via services such as Craigslist and eBay will occur at Ripon’s downtown hotel.

Ripon’s Plan Commission gave a request to allow this its blessing last week Wednesday night.

“I own the hotel ... I’ve owned it for 15 years, and I have an off-season that actually starts right now. I have a lot of time on my hands, and I want to buy and sell cars,” said Srbo Lazic, owner of the Welcome Inn. “I’ve been doing it for years already, without a license, just selling up to five, six a year. I think I’m pretty good at it, and I don’t feel like it’s going to affect my parking lot or anything.”

Wisconsin law states that individuals may sell a limited number of cars annually without a license, as Lazic has been doing.

“If you sell more than five, six,” then you need a license, Mayor Gary Will said at the meeting. “... Once you hit the number ... you need a dealer’s license to do it. That’s what he’s doing. [He is getting a license] so if he does go over the number, he doesn’t have to worry about the state coming in and knocking on his door.”

But to get the license, he needed a formal location from which to sell the vehicles.
