George Innes (Gim, Middy, Monk) Middleton, 88, died peacefully at his home in Greenville, SC on 20 August 2020, with family members to comfort him. George was born in Ripon, WI, 15 March 1932 to Phoebe Jane (Van Laanen) Middleton and James Archibald Middleton. His parents and elder siblings, James V. Middleton, and Myra J. Becker Erdmann predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judith (Lewis) Middleton and three children: Christopher (Vicki) Middleton, Andrew Middleton, and Sarah Middleton (Chris) Taylor, as well as his grandchildren: Joshua and Daniel Middleton, and Amelia and Christopher Taylor. He also leaves a pack of enthusiastic nieces and nephews, as well as many friends around the world.
George attended elementary school in his hometown of Ripon and in Green Bay, and attended high school at Lake Forest Academy in Illinois. He spent his first year of college at Dartmouth, then completed his studies at Ripon College. Following graduation, he served two years of active duty in the Army in Germany. Soon after his honorable discharge, he began coursework on an MBA at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1964, George began his career with the U.S. State Department. He married in 1968, was commissioned as a Foreign Service Officer, and left for his first assignment, to Belgrade. Throughout his career, he and his family lived in eight foreign countries alternating with assignments in Washington, D.C.: Belgrade, Moscow, Abidjan, Guatemala City, Hong Kong, Munich, Bangkok, and Paris, after which he retired and moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina.
The funeral service was on Aug. 24, 2020, at St. John of the Ladder Orthodox Church in Greenville, SC. Burial followed at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
