James Taylor Licking

James Taylor Licking of DeKalb, IL died of natural causes on July 22, 2016. He was the first baby born in the Cmeyla Hospital on June 2, 1924 in Kewaunee, WI, the son of Ralph Herbert Licking and Theresa (Taylor) Licking. He was a graduate of Ripon High School, Ripon, WI.

During World War II, he served an enlistment in the United States Army Air Corps that included duty in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Morotai in the Pacific Theater. He performed two years of active duty in the US Air Force from 1959-1961 in Sioux City, IA as a dental officer. He then joined the Wisconsin Air National Guard serving as a dental officer until his retirement from the military in 1976.

James graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in 1951. After graduation, he established dental practices in Greensburg, Indiana and DeKalb, Illinois. He also practiced dentistry with the US Veterans Administration in Tomah, Wisconsin. He had additional training in oral surgery and periodontics. James retired in 1988 after 37 years in private practice in DeKalb, IL. He served as President of the DeKalb, Illinois Dental Society.

He enjoyed travel, carpentry, and singing in the church choir. His parents, a sister, Rachel Jane Licking, and a brother John Licking predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elaine Licking, his daughters, Dr. Mary Licking of Nashua, New Hampshire and Doris Reeser (Alan) of Bloomington, IL, a son, David Licking (Sandi) of St. Charles, IL, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at 11:00am at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb with Reverend Judy Harris officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the DeKalb V.F.W., DeKalb American Legion, and Am Vets. Memorials can be made to the Hillcrest Covenant Church, DeKalb, IL, Illinois Veterans Home in LaSalle, IL, or the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
