RC men fall in battle of the Hawks

Trailing host Loras College 88-85 with 19 seconds left last week Saturday, the Ripon College men’s basketball team called a timeout.

“We used Isaac [Masters] and Cal [Schultz] and it was basically a read,” Ripon head coach Ryan Kane said of what he drew up in the break. “I wanted to see if Cal could turn the corner and get a quick two and extend the game; if not, to pull up and shoot the 3-[pointer].”

Schultz noticed a mismatch and drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game with 13 seconds left on the clock.

Loras then called a timeout of its own and capitalized to score a game-winning layup. The shot handed the Red Hawks their first loss at 90-88.

“In that timeout, we went small, wanted to switch everything, and we were a little too committed to their first two options, which were their best two players...” Kane said. “Both came off and we helped a little bit too much off their [No.] 5 man, who was trying to hand it off to them and he realized that he had a lane to the rim. And at that point, we didn’t want to foul, so we tried to play a little bit off and contest it without fouling and it fell in. By the time it fell in, we had under two seconds to get it in and we didn’t have any timeouts, so it was pretty much over.”

The back-and-forth finish pretty much summed up the game as the teams traded the lead 11 times and tied each other seven times.
