The Ripon High School softball team couldn’t overcome big innings Tuesday as it fell to host Winneconne 12-1 in five innings.
It allowed five runs to score in both the third and fourth innings.
The Wolves scored their other two runs in the second inning.
“The girls come out and they’re mentally prepared and ready to play the game — and as soon as the other team scores a couple of runs, they just get discouraged, I think,” Ripon head coach Mallary Nissen said of the big innings. “We just have to work on mental toughness.”
Ripon also struggled at the plate as it finished with just three hits, compared to 12 for Winneconne.
“I have to put them in situations in practices where I’m giving them tough pitches to hit and putting them in those situations so that they can get used to seeing those type of pitchers and knowing they can put the ball in play against good pitchers,” Nissen said.
The Tigers’ only run came in the fourth inning, when Amber Sandstrom drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mackenzie Briskie.
