Cross country: Cunningham places 47th at state

Katelin Cunningham leads a pack of runners around a turn at the state cross country meet last week Saturday. Cunningham finished 47th out of 150 runners with a time of 15 minutes, 55.78 seconds.

For the first mile and a half last week Saturday, Ripon High School junior Katelin Cunningham appeared on her way to another top-20 finish at the state cross country meet.

Unfortunately, it didn’t end the way she wanted it to.

Cunningham finished 47th out of 150 runners in Division 2 with a time of 15 minutes, 55.78 seconds.

The race took place at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

“It definitely wasn’t where she was expecting to finish or wanted to finish,” Ripon cross country coach Chris Gatze said.

Cunningham, who finished sixth at state as a freshman and 10th as a sophomore, was in 15 place at the mile marker.

Gatzke doesn’t know what attributed to her finish after that.

“The first mile and a half she looked very good; very strong,” he said. “She looked like the Katelin from the previous two years. What exactly happened [following that], I’m not sure.”
