With regionals just around the corner, the Ripon High School wrestling team received some valuable experience in high-pressure situations last week Saturday.
Three of its five duals at the Waupun Dual Tournament came down to the wire, with it coming out victorious in two of them.
The Tigers defeated Waupun by virtue of a tiebreaker 39-39, Marshall 43-35 and Hillsboro 67-10, while losing to Laconia 42-37 and Kewaskum 48-21.
The 3-2 record was good enough for third place out of six teams.
“As a team, we wrestled decent at the Waupun Dual Tournament,” Ripon head coach Jared Esala said. “We did start off a little slow in the first dual against Laconia. There were a couple matches that could have gone our way, and one more individual victory would have been the difference between losing and winning as a team.”
Against Laconia, the Tigers jumped out to a 31-12 lead before being pinned in each of the five heaviest weight classes. It won the final match via forfeit, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
The Laconia dual wasn’t the only tight competition Ripon was in.
