Playing at home for the first time since Dec. 20, the Ripon High School girls’ basketball team used a balance scoring attack and a 39-21 advantage in the final three quarters to defeat Clintonville 51-35 last week Friday.
Taylor Vander Plas led four Tigers with seven or more points with a game-high 16, while the team overcame a slow start.
The winner of three straight, Ripon (5-3, 6-6 overall) trailed 14-12 after one quarter before out-scoring the Truckers (1-7, 2-12 overall) 13-4 in the second to take a 27-16 lead and control of the game into halftime.
Tiger head coach Jason Wickstrom attributed the win in part to the defense stepping up after the first quarter and the offense getting more comfortable as the game progressed.
“We talked about being more aggressive and turning up our intensity,” he said. “We actually switched up the scheme. We were doing zone and man depending on if they made it or not and we just switched to plain old man. Sometimes when we’re just in man [-to-man coverage], we get more aggressive and, I think, when you play good defense it kind of leads to better offense.
“They played a zone against us and we hadn’t been zoned a lot, so I kind of figured we would struggle a little. But we started to get in the flow of things in the second half. We did a lot better. [We did] some good things as far as passing and cutting and some pick-and-rolls.”
