Lyke falls match short of making it to state; no other Tiger netters qualify

Laura Lyke returns a shot during a match earlier this year. Lyke was a match away from qualifying for the state tournament at last week Wednesday’s Whitewater Sectional.

The Tiger girls’ tennis team’s season came to an end last week Wednesday — though one senior nearly stretched it a bit longer.

Though no Ripon High School athlete will compete in the state tennis tournament, senior Laura Lyke came within one match of doing so.

“The girls went into sectionals with confidence,” said Becki Baird, co-head coach for the Tigers. “They know that when they reach that level of play they are up against some tough competition. Ryan [Long, the other co-head coach] and I were both pleased with their preparation before Wednesday. Mentally, they were ready to compete.”

Lyke finished with the best record out of the four singles players and three doubles duos Ripon sent to sectionals, taking second in the No. 2 flight.

She needed just two wins at the sectional tournament, held in Whitewater, Wis., to move on.

In Lyke’s first match, she dominated, winning 6-0, 6-4 against senior Melody Bless from Jefferson.

But, when she came up against freshman Maddie Molitor from Edgewood, she didn’t have an answer to the young phenom.

She ended up falling 0-6, 0-6 to see her season come to a close.
