Lili Alderson received a chance to go up against wrestlers of her own gender last week Saturday.
And she took advantage.
The Ripon High School junior, who usually wrestles boys in practice and competitions, took part in the Marty Loy Classic Girls Championships in Oshkosh.
Alderson went 2-1 in her weight class to finish second overall. She won her first match on a 23-10 decision and her second with a first-period pin, before falling in the title match on a 6-5 decision.
“Lili is a very coachable wrestler, so it was nice for her to go out and to take instruction and be able to kind of scout the girls that she was wrestling and figure out what she needed to do. That’s exactly what she did to get the first couple of wins under her belt,” Ripon head coach Lee Cotton said. “And the last match was a real nail-biter; it came right down to the end and she just came up a little bit short on that one point.”
He added he was pleased to see Alderson enjoy success.
