The Ripon Tiger volleyball team started and ended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Showdown on a high note last weekend.
In between, it displayed flashes of strong play, but was unable to come away with any more victories.
The Tigers defeated Elkhart Lake 25-19, 26-24 last week Friday to get the two-day competition started, before dropping the next five. They then beat Campbellsport 25-16, 11-25, 15-13 to cap it off.
Losses were suffered at the hands of Lodi (25-27, 16-25), Xavier (15-25, 11-25), Prairie School (25-21, 10-25, 11-15), New Berlin Eisenhower (15-25, 17-25) and Greenfield (17-25, 19-25).
“We have some great peaks and then we get caught in some valleys in the way that we play,” Ripon head coach Tracy Landerman said. “When we struggle, we get caught where teams rattle off quite a few points and then we’re in that position where we have to dig and get ourselves back out.”
She was pleased with the Tigers start against Elkhart Lake and noted she saw some positives in their next two matches.
“The other teams in our pool [were] very strong teams,” Landerman said. “... But again, those are the challenges that we are looking for and we stayed tight with Lodi in game one. And then we got into game two and Lodi took command of that game and we were kind of always on the defense trying to catch up and stay in the game.”
Ripon then put together a couple good series of offensive attacks against Xavier, but the Hawks’ strong, disciplined hitters overmatched Ripon.
The Tigers continued to be competitive in the first match of bracket play last week Saturday as they defeated The Prairie School 25-21 in the first game, before dropping the final two 10-25, 11-15.
