Ripon Tiger cross country coach Chris Gatzke will be the first to admit that the competition at the Warrior Invitational wasn’t as good as it could have been.

But for him, that takes nothing away from his teams’ season-opening performances last week Thursday.

Both the Tiger boys’ and girls’ squads won their respective titles as they defeated five other schools at the meet, which took place on the grounds of EAA in Oshkosh.

Among the other teams in attendance were Princeton/Green Lake, host school Oshkosh Valley Christian, Campbellsport, Markesan and Wayland Academy.

“It was a great way to start the season,” Gatzke said. “We know that the competition may not have been top-notch, the best that we could compete against, but coming out with a victory was nice on both sides.”

On the girls’ side, Ripon had four of the top-eight finishers, with their fifth and final scorer coming across the line 11th. It defeated Campbellsport 41-34 for the title.

Julia Long led with a fourth-place time of 23 minutes, 10 seconds, while Tirion Radtke wasn’t far behind as she finished fifth with a time of 23:23.

They were followed by Morgan Schultz (seventh, 23:51), McKenzie Nodolf (eighth, 23:52) and Julia Skamra (11th, 24:06).
