Rodriguez captures 2nd state title in four years

Andrew Rodriguez shows off his state championship trophy and six medals.

Ripon Community Swim Club member Andrew Rodriguez captured his second state championship in four years last weekend at the 13 & Over Short Course State Championships.

Rodriguez (15- to 16-year-old age group), who also won a state title in 2013, edged Bennett McDade of the Badger Aquatics Club after a back-and-forth few days.

The Ripon swimmer placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, second in the 100 butterfly and second in the 400 individual medley last week Friday, but was tied in points with McDade after the first day.

Both swimmers added first-place finishes a day later — Rodriguez in the 200 backstroke and McDade in the 500 freestyle — to remain tied entering the final day.

The two stayed deadlocked after their respective first events Sunday as Rodriguez placed second in the 200 butterfly and McDade finished as the runner-up in the 100 freestyle. That set up a highest-finisher-takes-all situation in the 200 individual medley and Rodriguez was able to come away with a first-place finish. McDade finished the race in second place.

Rodriguez was one of four Ripon swimmers competing at the meet, which took place at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis.

Also taking part in the competition were Quyn Duffy (15-16 age group), Marcel Hones (17-and-up age group) and Sam Ryf (13-14 age group). They combined to medal (top-eight finish) in five events.

  • Duffy: Placed fifth in the 200 butterfly, sixth in the 100 butterfly, 11th in the 100 freestyle, 13th in the 500 freestyle, 19th in the 200 freestyle and 26th in the 50 freestyle.
