The competition heated up for the Ripon Tiger boys’ cross country team Tuesday in Berlin.
Running in their hottest meet of the season, the Tigers finished third out of eight teams in an invitational in which the top-four schools were separated by just four points.
Wautoma and Winneconne tied for first with 65 points, while Ripon scored 67 and Berlin ended up with 69.
The Tiger girls, meanwhile, placed fourth out of seven teams with 130 points. Winneconne won the meet for the girls with 45 points.
The invitational took place at Mascoutin Golf Club.
“We continue to improve on our times for the most part; there were a couple that were a little bit slower and a couple a little bit faster and a couple right in line with what we’ve done so far,” Ripon head coach Chris Gatzke said. “[I’m] very pleased with how we did; [there were] good, strong finishes on both the boys’ and the girls’ side.”
Leading the Tiger boys was Riley Gatzke. The senior, who qualified for state a year ago, finished second with a time of 17 minutes, 37.35 seconds.
Quyn Duffy wasn’t far behind, as the fellow senior came across the line fifth overall with a time of 17:47.42.
