Quyn Duffy won an event and finished second in another to lead the Ripon High School boys’ track and field team to a runner-up finish at the Ripon College Showcase.
The meet was the first high school indoor track competition hosted inside the college’s new field house.
It featured 30 schools: 15 in the large division and 15 in the small division. Ripon was a member of the small division.
The Tiger girls, meanwhile, finished last in the small division.
“[The boys were] really competitive ...,” Ripon head coach Chris Gatzke said. “[I] was very surprised and pleased to see that [we finished second]. I think we only won one event and that would have been the 800 [run] with Quyn, but …we just had places all the way through.”
Duffy led the Tigers, winning the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 1.48 seconds.
He also ran a leg for the 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams, which came across the line in second- and fifth-place, respectively.
“He’s quite a bit ahead of where he was last year, so I’m hoping that does well for us going forward,” Chris Gatzke said. “…Even the 3,200 relay, which he was part of, he ran a 2:02 split there.”
The 3,200 relay team, which consisted of Duffy, Riley Gatzke, Jesus Beltran and Noah Rindo, also is well ahead of where it was last year. It ended last season by breaking the school record twice and competing at the state meet.
