RC men come up short against top competition

Scott Gillespie flies toward the rim.

Red Hawk men’s basketball players and coaches knew they’d be facing tough competition at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament last week Friday and Saturday.

What they didn’t know is how their team would react in its first live-game action.

Ripon won its first game against Buena Vista 85-75, but dropped the championship game to No. 4 ranked Illinois Wesleyan 82-74.

“The best thing about the weekend was how good our opponents were,” coach Bob Gillespie said. “Down the road, it should help us.”

In the season-opening win, the Red Hawks played Buena Vista close in the first half, taking a 47-42 lead.

Matt Nelson was a key for the Red Hawks in the first half, connecting on three shots from behind the 3-point line for nine points. Scott Gillespie led the first half with 10 points.

In the second half, it was Ripon’s Aris Wurtz that did the damage, going off for 17 points in the first 10 minutes of the period.
