The Ripon College softball team’s woes continued Tuesday afternoon as it dropped a pair of non-conference road games to Carthage.
It lost the first game 9-2 and the second contest 7-2.
In the first game, the Red Hawks (8-25 overall) were within one run of the Lady Red (16-10 overall) entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but allowed five runs to score in the frame and could never recover in the twin bill.
Carthage scored the first seven runs of game two with two each in the third, fourth and fifth innings and one more in the sixth.
Ripon scored its two runs in the top of the seventh on a Cassie Bilotto two-run home run. It was just one of three hits in the game.
Bilotto also drove in the Red Hawks’ only two runs in the first contest. She finished that game 3 for 4 at the plate with the two RBIs.
The Red Hawks saw their hopes of qualifying for the Midwest Conference Tournament slip away Monday as they were swept by Carroll in a home doubleheader.
Needing to win both games and receive help from other teams, they were defeated 5-1 and 9-1.
The first game remained close for most of the way, until the Pioneers broke it open with a four-run seventh inning. Ripon committed three costly errors in the inning.
In the second contest, with the Red Hawks already eliminated from tournament contention, Carroll scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back.
